How the PFT is scored

The Marine Corps PFT has three events, each worth up to 100 points, for a maximum of 300. You choose pull-ups or push-ups, then do the plank, then the 3-mile run. Marines aged 46 and over can row 5,000m instead of running, and younger Marines can row if a medical provider recommends it.

  • Pass: at least 150 total points and the minimum standard in every event.
  • Classes: 1st class is 235–300, 2nd class is 200–234, 3rd class is 150–199.
  • Pull-ups vs push-ups: pull-ups can earn 100 points. Push-ups stop at 70 points, so the best possible total with push-ups is 270.
  • Plank: one table for every age and sex. 1:10 earns 40 points and 3:45 earns 100.
  • Run and row: scored by age group and sex. Altitude testing at 4,500 ft or above adds 1:30 to the run standards and 0:40 to the row standards.

The PFT is held between 1 January and 30 June each year.

PFT calculator FAQ

What is a passing PFT score?

You need 150 total points and at least the minimum in each event. If you fall below the minimum in any one event, the whole PFT is a fail, even if your total is above 150.

What is a good PFT score?

Anything from 235 up is a 1st class PFT. A score of 285 or higher is considered outstanding and is noted on fitness reports for sergeants and above.

Should I do pull-ups or push-ups?

If you can do enough pull-ups to beat your push-up score, choose pull-ups. They are the only way to earn the full 100 points on the upper-body event. Use the target planner above to compare what each choice would need.

Are crunches still an option?

No. The abdominal crunch was discontinued on 31 December 2022, so the plank is the core event.

What if my run time falls between two steps in the table?

The official tables list run times every 10 seconds and row times every 5 seconds. This calculator scores a time in the slower step, so 20:03 is scored as 20:10. Check close calls with the official Marine Corps calculator.

Are altitude standards different?

Yes. At 4,500 feet above sea level or higher, the run and row are scored against adjusted tables. Push-ups, pull-ups and the plank do not change.

This is an unofficial calculator. Scoring follows the tables in Marine Corps Order 6100.13A with Change 4 (plank table effective 1 January 2022). It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the U.S. Marine Corps. Always confirm your official score with your unit and the official calculator.
