Pool Salt Calculator for Saltwater Pools
Our pool salt calculator helps you estimate how much salt you need to add to a saltwater swimming pool. Enter the pool volume in US gallons, your current salt level, and your desired target level to get an easy-to-read estimate in pounds, kilograms, and salt bags.
This tool is designed for homeowners and pool owners who want a quick way to estimate salt requirements before adding pool salt. Always compare the result with the operating instructions for your specific salt chlorine generator and pool equipment.
How to Use the Pool Salt Calculator
Using this pool salt calculator takes only a few steps. You need your pool's approximate water volume and current salt reading. A digital salt tester or test strip can help you determine the current level.
- Enter your pool volume in US gallons.
- Enter the current salt level in ppm.
- Select your desired target salt level.
- Select the size of your salt bag.
- Optionally enter the price per bag.
- Click Calculate Salt.
The calculator will then show the estimated pounds of salt, kilograms of salt, number of bags, ppm increase, and estimated cost when a bag price is provided.
How Much Salt Does a Pool Need?
The amount of salt a pool needs depends mainly on the pool volume and the difference between its current salt level and the target salt level. A larger swimming pool requires more salt to create the same increase in ppm.
Salt chlorine generators can have different recommended operating ranges. Because of that, your generator's manual should be used when choosing the final target salt level.
Pool Salt Calculator Formula
The calculator estimates salt requirements using the pool volume and the required increase in salt concentration. In simplified form, the calculation converts the difference in ppm into pounds of salt for the total pool volume.
Salt needed (lb) = Pool volume × PPM increase × 8.345 ÷ 1,000,000
The calculated weight is converted to kilograms and divided by the selected bag size. The number of bags is rounded up because pool salt is normally purchased in complete bags.
Pool Salt Reference Chart
The following examples show an approximate amount of salt required when increasing a pool from 0 ppm to 3,200 ppm. Actual requirements depend on the measured starting level.
| Pool Size | Salt Needed | 40 lb Bags |
|---|---|---|
| 5,000 gallons | 133.5 lb | 4 bags |
| 10,000 gallons | 267.0 lb | 7 bags |
| 15,000 gallons | 400.6 lb | 11 bags |
| 20,000 gallons | 534.1 lb | 14 bags |
| 25,000 gallons | 667.6 lb | 17 bags |
| 30,000 gallons | 801.1 lb | 21 bags |
How Many Bags of Salt Do I Need?
The number of bags depends on the amount of salt required and the weight of each bag. For example, if your calculation shows 267 pounds of salt and you are using 40-pound bags, you would need 6.675 bags mathematically, so the practical purchase estimate is 7 bags.
Use the bag-size selector above if your pool salt is sold in 50-pound, 60-pound, 80-pound, or another size.
What If My Pool Already Has Enough Salt?
If your current salt reading is equal to the selected target, the calculator will show zero additional salt needed. If your current level is higher than the target, do not automatically add more salt. The tool will display a warning instead.
If the salt level is too high, follow the instructions for your salt chlorine generator and test the water before making any correction. Do not make chemical adjustments based only on an estimate.
Pool Salt and Water Testing
A calculation is only as accurate as the information entered. For better results, measure your current pool salt level rather than guessing it. You should also follow the instructions for your specific testing method and salt chlorine generator.
The CDC guidance for home pool and hot tub water treatment and testing recommends routinely checking disinfectant levels and pH and following manufacturer instructions for pool products.
Pool Chemical Safety
Pool chemicals should always be handled carefully. Follow the product label, use appropriate protective equipment, and keep chemicals secured away from children and pets.
